The 38th Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council focused on the human rights situation in and around El Fasher in the context of the ongoing conflict in Sudan. In the course of the session, the Council adopted resolution S-38/1, inter alia recalling the obligations of all parties to the conflict under international humanitarian law, as well as the commitments made by the parties under the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan, including allowing and facilitating humanitarian relief. The resolution strongly condemns the escalating violence and requests the independent international fact-finding mission for the Sudan to conduct an urgent inquiry, including to identify all those responsible for the alleged violations with a view to holding them accountable.

Human Rights Research League supports the Resolution and underlines that the recent takeover of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) was neither an isolated nor unforeseeable event, but the predictable outcome of a conflict defined by inhumanity, impunity and the world's persistent failure to act.
